Performance management isn’t all about poor performance.
It’s important for business owners and managers to give continuous feedback to their team, setting targets and objectives and spending time on their development to get the best out of them.

What is performance management?
Performance management is about getting the best out of your employees. It means keeping a track of your team’s performance and helping them to continuously develop their skills so that they can contribute further to the team.
Having a performance management procedure in your business means that managers should set objectives for their team, track performance continuously and help them to improve, and hold them accountable for their work.
It’s centred around a two-way discussion between the manager and employee, and is focused on open communication and feedback, helping them work towards their objectives.
What’s involved in performance management?
Most performance management stems from a performance review. You set objectives and review these on a regular basis, considering how the individual has performed across the period.
These conversations often raise areas for improvement, or areas of poor performance, which should be handled quickly and appropriately.
As a manager, you should have regular conversations with your direct reports to make sure that they have the skills and tools available for them to be an efficient member of the team and work towards achieving the business objectives.
You should log all of this within your appraisal software, to keep track of everything you’ve discussed.
