Pay rises are not the answer

  3. Pay rises are not the answer

The next time one of your staff comes in to demand a pay rise, bear this in mind: More money won’t make them work harder any more than it will make them happy:

“It turns out that there are three factors that the science shows lead to better performance, not to mention personal satisfaction: autonomy, mastery and purpose.”

The quote comes from Daniel Pink’s book Drive, one of the books I got back to over Christmas. Now we all know that there’s a time to entertain demands for a pay rise and a time to remind them that money won’t buy happiness. But what I like about Pink’s book is that it reminds us that, whatever (s)he says in demanding a pay rise, more money will not deliver what you hope it will. Make sure that they have the autonomy to do the right job, feel that they are master of their role and that coming in to work delivers something towards a sense of purpose. Then they’ll be outperforming their objectives and contributing to business success.

If you want to hear a bit more about the science, but don’t have the time to read the whole book, this video is a great 10-minute animated summary, narrated by Pink himself.
